iPhone OS 3 due June 17th

June 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Also just announced at the WWDC, iPhone/iPod Touch OS version 3 will be released on 17th June. As before, this is a free upgrade for iPhone users and a paid ($9.99) upgrade for iPod Touch owners. Most of the changes have been covered in depth before, but include:

  • Cut, Copy, Paste and Undo across all apps
  • Landscape screen support in key Apple apps
  • MMS support for some carriers
  • Spotlight search for anything on the iPhone
  • Rent/Buy video content through iTunes
  • Tethering, share the mobile connection with a computer. Not all carriers are offering this.
  • Faster Safari Browser with Autofill
  • More than 30 languages supported
  • ‘Find my iPhone’ tracking and remote erase through Mobile Me

This update should please a lot of iPhone users complaining the lack of basic functionality, especially when the Palm Pre looks to have got a lot right with its first release.

Multi OS comparison by opinions

Not quite as objective as my recent comparison of Linux/Mac OS/XP/Vista, Computerworld has a piece titled ‘OS Smackdown: Linux vs. Mac OS X vs. Windows Vista vs. Windows XP’. There’s no numbers involved, just the opinions of four computer journalists. It’s an interesting read if only for the way some of the writers manipulate or ignore the facts about the other operating systems.

10.5.2 due this year

Mac OS Leopard discI can understand wanting to get the next Mac OS update right but how long do we have to wait? I’ve delayed starting on my hackintosh until 10.5.2 is out to make sure I buy hardware that will work with the minimum of patching. There are so many reputed fixes in the update that it’s going to be a must for all Leopard users, finally giving us the quality we were originally promised.
Mac news sites and forums were happily predicting 10.5.2 would accompany the Macbook Air, but it wasn’t so. They’ve now moved onto new multi touch Macbook Pro’s due in February and 10.5.2 will launch with them. MacRumors has news that build 9C27 was made available to developers on Thursday, so even if that becomes the final version we won’t see it until late next week.
I’ve got money burning a hole in my pocket Apple. Please get the update out before another gadget tempts me.
