Dual monitors with a hackintosh

December 28, 2009 6 comments

For the past few years I’ve used a Dell 2005FPW screen, which although reliable was limited by its 1680 x 1050 resolution. I’m using a full HD video camera and TV so the next step was a HD or better monitor for editing. I wasn’t sure if the 9800GT card in my main hackintosh would need software tweaks to support two monitors but a quick test with a spare 15 inch TV/monitor showed it worked fine. Just to recap, I’m using an EFI string for video card support with the default 9800GTX setting from OSX86Tools.

Next step was to choose a monitor. Since I don’t play a lot of games the main use will be video and photo editing, so I was looking for something with good contrast and black levels as well as reasonable colour accuracy. The target was HD or better resolution and around a 24 inch screen. The most common resolution at this size was 1920×1200 until recently, but these displays are rapidly disappearing to be replaced with 1920×1080 panels. All the comments I found on this give cheaper manufacturing as the reason. Read more…

The entry level Macintosh

March 7, 2009 2 comments

Apple updated it’s non-laptop hardware this week, and the one thing that really struck me was the UK Mac Mini pricing. In January 2005 I bought a 1.42Ghz Mac Mini G4 from the Apple UK store for £441. At the time this was a good spec with 512Mb of ram and an 80Gb hard drive. The top Mac Mini model in March 2009 is now £649. Hardly an entry level computer any more.

The spec is greatly improved, but nowhere near current average desktop specs. The lower Mac Mini model has the same processor and less Ram/Hard drive space for £500. A catalog from Dell turned up in the post this week, and for £400 I could buy a mini tower with a Core2Duo E7400, 2Gb Ram, 250Gb Hard Drive, DVDrw and a 19″ widescreen monitor. Thats a lot of computer for the price. While I understand the exchange rate is not favourable in the UK at the moment, how does Apple expect to sell at these prices? Apart from the size and software I can’t see what the Mac Mini can offer at the moment. And why does it still look the same as three years ago?

NYC demands fix for WiFi issues

April 21, 2008 Leave a comment

This story made me chuckle. The New York City Department of Education have suspended delivery of all Macs until WiFi connectivity issues have been resolved. Current suggestions are that the fix will be included in the 10.5.3 update. From the article at AppleInsider, Apple has ‘apologized for the delay both in an email to faculty obtained by AppleInsider, and in a notice on the Apple product catalog on the Dell Managed Systems website’.That’s a lot more than us joe public’s have received so far for a problem that has existed since Leopard first shipped.

The second part is the most ironic given the history of public digs between Apple and Dell. All Apple wireless systems are currently held by Dell Managed Services, who have the DoE contract to handle computer procurement. So Apple has a problem with it’s laptops and Dell won’t release them until it’s fixed. Priceless.
