Tomtom tries new way to fleece customers

October 6, 2008 Leave a comment

Looks like Tomtom is the latest company to jump on the subscription bandwagon. Rather than buy an updated map once a year or so you can now subscribe and get four updates a year. The Tomtom HOME software offers updates for as little as £9.95 a quarter, but when I looked at the offer the price jumped to £59.70 as I have to buy the latest map first. There’s just a few of problems with this.

  1. I bought my Tomtom Go 720 six months ago. Shouldn’t a GPS device include a years updates to maps, then a yearly fee to keep up to date? I can understand safety cash generators camera’s and traffic announcements being paid for add-ons, but maps? That’s an expensive joke.
  2. My device came with a latest map guarantee that has never worked. When I enter the code into the Tomtom HOME software I get a message that the ‘Promotion code does not exist or promotion has ended’. I bought a new current model TomTom GPS unit from a UK retailer and I’m expected to start paying for new maps after a couple of months. That’s called a rip off.
  3. The subscription service isn’t saving you any money. Until very recently the Tomtom map of Western Europe was priced around £60, the same cost as the subscription service after I pay for the new map. Buying the new map outright has risen to £80. When quality Sat Nav’s are dropping in price all the time it can’t be that far off when it becomes cheaper to throw it away and buy a new one.

iPod Nano 4G case revealed

August 25, 2008 Leave a comment

A case for the rumoured 4th generation iPod Nano has showed up on Alibaba.com. Shown above, the silicon case appears to confirm the image leaked by Kevin Rose a couple of days ago. The interesting part from the product details is ‘Various color available, match with iPod nano 4G colors’. Will this be the same colours as the current range? This excitement is just too much.

The details I really want are on the rumoured inclusion of GPS in the new iPod Touch. Now that would be one sweet PDA, if only Apple would get the copy/paste and syncing of notes and todos sorted out.

Why iPod touch location awareness sucks

July 19, 2008 14 comments

One of the best features of the iPhone is its location awareness. Using Cell tower/WiFi proximity and now GPS with the iPhone 3G, it knows where it is and can use this information in a growing number of location aware applications. In theory the iPod Touch can do the same using only wireless access point data, but unless you live in a city the service is pretty hit and miss. I live in a reasonably sized UK town and my iTouch can’t tell where it is. Read more…

Tomtom V8 gallery and changes

A couple of months ago I bought a Tomtom Go 720. The GPS unit comes with maps of Western Europe, which was great for my recent trips to Italy and Spain. Using the Tomtom home application it’s easy to download map corrections and software updates, which brings me to the reason for this article. After several minor updates to the version 7 software the Go 720 came with, the latest update has installed version 8.010. Read more…
