Palm Pre coming soon

May 25, 2009 Leave a comment

Palm_PreSo we know the Palm Pre launches in the US on 6th June for $199.99 with a 2 year contract. Now Palmgoon.com have the news (via the Guardian Newspaper) that O2 will offer the Pre in the Uk. That should make for an interesting match, with O2 already offering the iPhone. Speaking of competition, the Palm Goon web site makes no bones about who the competition is, with most of their articles directly comparing the Pre to the iPhone. Anyone would think RIM and Nokia ceased to exist when the iPhone was released. Or is this personal, since much of Palm’s management team are ex-Apple staff?

Here’s a few images of the Palm Pre software in action, lots more at palmgoon.com

ACDSee Pro for Mac

May 23, 2009 Leave a comment

The ACDSee image viewing software has been around for a long time on Windows, and if I’m not mistaken there was a Mac version several years ago that fizzled out. ACDSee Pro for Mac appears to be a completely new app available now as a free beta download, with Macworld reporting the final version is due in 2010 at $170. The current beta lists the expiry date as February 19th 2010. Read more…

10.5.7 on Hackintosh

10.5.7

My main hackintosh is now updated to 10.5.7, using the 10.5.7 update dmg downloaded from the Apple web site. I could have used the Software Update install method which has worked just as well for the past couple of updates, but I have three machines to install on so it makes sense to download once. There appear to be no issues following the update, just the usual replacement of files that the update overwrites. Read more…

Mac Os 10.5.7 released

May 13, 2009 1 comment

Software UpdateApple has today released the latest update to its Mac OSX Leopard operating system. 10.5.7 offers the usual mix of bug fixes and security updates, and is available as an updater for 10.5.6 or a combo updater for any version of 10.5 Leopard.

Many components are updated in this release, including RAW image support, Nvidia graphic updates, Widgets, Finder network searches and printing. Knowledge base article HT3397 covers the update in greater depth. And for anyone wanting the last word in detail, Macworld has an article that lists just about everything updated.

My advice for anyone applying the update (hackintosh or macintosh) is make a backup before attempting. We all make regular backups though, don’t we? I’ve just had a 120Gb hard drive die that was fortunately used exlusively for playing games on Windows XP, but at just over three years old and light use it was certainly not an expected failure.

Plex 8

PlexI’ve mentioned Plex before, a branch of the XBMC software on Macintosh. It’s my media centre of choice, running on the Home Theatre hackintosh I put together a few months ago.

Released a couple of days ago is Plex V8, first release of the new stable branch following on from the development seven series. Download the Mac OS Leopard only dmg , release notes and source code from here. There are several new features and lots of fixes so it’s worth giving Plex a try.

Windows 7 RC released

The Windows 7 Release Candidate is now available to the general public, having been offered to MSDN and Technet subscribers for a few days. I downloaded the ISO image earlier today from the Microsoft web site. The most surprising thing for me about this was that it was done on a Mac using Firefox, but I guess Microsoft is taking web standards a bit more seriously these days.

VMware Fusion has just finished installing Windows 7RC using the Windows Vista profile. The install went very smoothly and surprisingly fast using the easy install feature and the release candidate serial Microsoft emailed. There’s no Aero 3D at the moment but that’s not a big loss. The most impresive thing having played for a few minutes is that simple tasks like changing display preferences are easily accessible with one right click on the desktop. Windows 7 even picked up when I made VMware full screen and automatically adjusted display resolution to 1680×1050.
