iPhone version 2 software available now

Macrumors has the link to iPhone V2 software, obtained from Apple’s XML files which I’m guessing were part of iTunes 7.7 released this morning. The link is

for those who can’t wait a few more hours for the official release. This performs a complete erase of the iPhone before installing, but reports say iTunes offers to make a backup of the current contents before proceding. The new firmware is only compatible with the iPhone, some Macrumors forum posters have tried it with the iPod touch with no success.

This is release 5A347, a couple of versions on from the last 5A345 beta. No word on what changes were made between the two releases.

UPDATE The final release is now available through iTunes, and Mac Rumors is reporting it has the slightly changed name of iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw. No word yet on what’s different in this version.

iTunes 7.7 available for download, in software update

Following news yesterday evening that iTunes 7.7 was due imminently it’s now available from both the itunes download page at Apple.com, and software update. The big addition is the App store, although this doesn’t seem to be currently available and there’s no software update for the iPod touch yet (v1.1.4 is still the latest). From the notes on the iTunes download page, ‘Access to the App Store requires the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch, sold separately.’

UPDATE The App store has now appeared in the UK, and I have browsed and downloaded several of the free apps. Still no sign of the version 2 update at 22:52, so us iPod Touch owners are left staring at all those lovely apps we can’t use yet. Looks like Installer will be serving up software for another night.
