Macintosh anti-virus software part 2

3 03 2008

Last time I looked at three of the commercial anti-virus packages available for the Macintosh, from Symantic, Sophos and Mcafee. Of the three only Symantic’s Norton anti-virus for Mac was aimed at home users, and Sophos was anything but straightforward for a home user to buy. So what else is available? Free iPhone/iPod Wallpapers

26 01 2008

I have been looking for some simple and bright wallpapers for my iPod touch and not finding what I wanted, so I decided to have a go myself. And it’s all about sharing, right?
Right click the images below to save, images will save at full size. Drop them into iTunes (I recommend into a new album), sync to device and select as wallpaper.

Leave a comment if you want any other colours.

10 useful iPod/iPhone apps

17 01 2008

App InstallerInteresting page here showing some of the applications that are available for the jailbroken iPhone/iTouch. Mostly utilities to make life easier and prettier, but if this is what hackers (and that’s the original meaning) can do with no help, just think what we will be seeing when the SDK is released.

Apple Keynote 2008 opinions

15 01 2008

Lets get the big rant out of the way first.

20 DOLLARS TO UPGRADE THE IPOD TOUCH WITH FIVE APPS ALREADY AVAILABLE ON THE IPHONE AND EVERY JAILBROKEN TOUCH IS A JOKE.

Normal non-shouty blog resumes. I can understand the Mail, Maps, Stocks, Notes and Weather apps not being on the original iPod touch. It was an iPod, so did what the previous iPod did when it came to PIM. Not being able to add calendar events was a mistake that was rectified. But this is just taking the piss. All the early adopters that helped make the Christmas quarter such a huge success get shafted. Buy an iPod touch today and get the software for free. How can the company which styles itself as the cool guy fighting Microsoft’s corporation crap on its users like this? Leaves an unpleasant taste after all the other good things that were announced.

Switching to Free sofware

31 12 2007

One of the ideas I have been toying with for a while now has been switching to free sofware, or reasonably priced software. The second MacUpdate promo bundle finished recently, and I got some great software for £25. Most of it I wanted, some was usually priced out of my reach so you can’t complain about £25 for twelve bits of quality software. There’s a similar bundle on sale soon at MacHeist, and for now you can solve the challenges they are posting to win free software and money off the bundle when it goes on sale. Good fun and some nice software given away so far.
But what of the free software? There’s some excellent stuff out there, so I’ve added a new section to the site to document my switch to free and cheap software. Microsoft office may be the industry leader, but how much power do you need to write a letter?

My first recommendation is Frostwire, a free open source Limewire replacement.
